Shannon’s 2012 Recap

Here we go again…Christmas is done, New Year’s Eve is right around the corner and 2013 is knocking on the door. I love all things Christmas, but the minute it’s December 26 I feel ready to start a fresh year. I think that feeling is stronger than ever this year with the heartbreaking tragedies experienced throughout the country in the last few weeks. I know I’m not alone in wanting to hug my kids a little tighter, keep them a little closer and make sure they know how much I love them.

So let’s kick off this 2012 recap with a shout out to what I’m most grateful for this year (husband included, just not in this photo), and here they are…I am super lucky that I get to be their mom.  And I think about it every day.

My very favorite things this year…

For Me:

Aviator Sunglasses

I think we all should have a pair. They look good on everyone and Ray-Ban is really bringing it back. Plus, remember how cool Maverick and Goose looked?

For the Kids:

ZoLi ‘BOT’ Cup

This cup is the best thing ever. For anyone who has ever sat and watched their poor baby try to drink out of a sippy cup with a straw with their head tilted way back and no liquid remotely close to the straw, trying to encourage them to keep it straight, this cup is the answer. The bottom of the straw is weighted, so no matter which way your kid is swinging their head around while trying to drink, the straw stays with the liquid. It’s genius. And you know what, I bought it at Nordstrom. Yup, I bought a sippy cup at Nordstrom. And it’s awesome. And also available on Amazon for a dollar less.

Favorite Movie:

Flight

I watched this entire movie with my mouth hanging open. I could watch it ten more times. Whenever someone opens their mouth about going to the movies, I’m all over them asking if they saw Flight. I can’t help it, I just want to talk about it with someone! I hope Denzel Washington wins and wins and wins for this. And I’m happy I don’t have any upcoming air travel plans.  For more reasons than one, click here to read the post about the worst travel experience ever this year. I guarantee this will not be an “in-flight” movie.

Favorite Song:

Call Me Maybe

I think it just might be my favorite song this year. It’s so happy, and I’m loving all the remakes from the Harvard Baseball Team to the 2012 USA Olympic Swimming Team to Jimmy Fallon and Carly Rae Jepsen and The Roots with classroom instruments. Even Call Me Maybe Cookie Monster. And if you don’t like this song, you’re just cranky.

Favorite Television Show:

Parenthood

I chose Parenthood as my favorite show last year too, but I think it’s even better this season.  The breast cancer story line has me sobbing every episode, and watching Ray Romano in a serious role has been intriguing.  I continue to be unable to get enough.

OBVIOUSLY I continue to be obsessed with all things Bravo.  But mainly my favorite Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I love all of the Housewives, I don’t discriminate, but Beverly Hills is my front runner. It’s super trashy TV, and I love every minute of it. Don’t judge.

Favorite New Kitchen Item:

Green Pan Ceramic Non-Stick Cookware

Lately I’ve been worried that I’m cooking a little toxicity into each quesadilla I prepare my munchkins with my old cookware. So I’ve gone green. And I LOVE them! Best pans ever. And I have one less thing giving me anxiety. My little quesadillas taste SO much better.

Favorite Post of 2012:

What’s Wrong With My Son?

I’m not sure I would say it was my favorite. It was definitely the hardest to write. I write a lot of posts, mostly about high calorie desserts, but every once in a while, writing a post really gets me, and I usually hack it out with damp eyes. In a lot of ways, blogging is like writing a diary entry and putting it out there for all of you to see. I got 23 responses to my post, it was a very hard time, and I can’t tell you how much I appreciated all of those words of support and suggestion. It’s been six months since I wrote that post, and it got worse before it got better. I’ve been inside an MRI tube with him, I’ve helped anesthesiologists hold him down as he’s been put under for different procedures, and I’ve watched him wake up in hospital beds screaming in pain. It’s been very, very hard. And it has also made me very, very, very grateful for what parents of children much, much, much more seriously ill than mine go through on a daily basis. Having a child with health issues changes your perspective on many things. We finally got an answer about this little guy right before Christmas and the very good news that his problem is not serious and something that he will grow out of. Thankful isn’t even the right word.

Your children are adorable. I am glad that you received good news about your son–it’s just an indication that 2013 will be an even better year. So bring on 2013–and more chocolate! 🙂
