I Love Period Dramas and Keira Knightley

I love period dramas, and by virtue of a shared love of period dramas, I now love Keira Knightley.

First, I respected her for her work in Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, but it turns out she’s done a dozen or more “period” pieces.  When asked why she likes costume dramas, Knightley told Missy Schwartz of’s Popwatch,

“I like the fact that you can completely dive in to a total fantasy — because it’s total escapism. It’s about escaping from the way you live and getting to walk around in an alien being’s shoes. I find that quite freeing. And I love watching them. I love the sumptuous nature of them and how opulent they can be. I’m not against contemporary, and I haven’t purposefully just done period things. It just so happened that the scripts and the characters were the ones that interested me the most.”

It seems that some people are still scratching their heads at Knightley’s continuous costume drama choices, but each film has been well-made and pretty simply, I’m a sucker for them.  Since my husband hates (no, that’s not too strong of a word for him) this film genre, watching period films is most often a quiet time that I indulge in alone…not such a terrible thing for a busy mom of two little boys.

The reason I’m finally making a to-do about the evident kindred spirit of Keira Knightley is because of her upcoming role in Anna Karenina, due in theaters November 9.  Anna Karenina is one of my favorite novels, and I can’t wait to see how the sweeping (and long) story is translated to film.  Keira indeed has a face that can be both strong and frail as the character of Anna falls from grace.

What’s your favorite period drama?

I was hooked after reading EM Forester’s A Room with a View and then seeing Helena Bonham Carter as the heroine, Lucy Honeychurch. Something about class struggles and appropriate behavior catches me, and beautiful scenery.
