Healthy Living for Mom: The Spiral

Sometimes you just want a milkshake.

Or a brownie.

Or a pan of brownies.

While I’m usually eager to examine the week and learn the big giant lesson, sometimes there’s no real lesson other than, “I wanted it”.

Okay, that’s a lie. There was a lesson last week. Starting on Wednesday, I got a hankering for a brownie. I resisted. Until Saturday when in a huff, I purchased a brownie mix during a trip to the grocery store. But that wasn’t going to be quick enough, so on the way home I got milkshakes.

Only one of them was for me. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip.

Had I visited a bakery on Wednesday or even Thursday of last week, I would have been happy with a brownie. But I waited so long that by the time Saturday rolled around, it was all I could do to let the little buggers cool off before I ate three of them.

If you’re on a diet (or considering one) I strongly encourage you to write weekly about it. I have learned so much in the last seven weeks about my body, my cravings, nutrition, and my attitude towards food. So when it came time to write about this week, I knew that it was simply a matter of really wanting to indulge.

Healthy doesn’t mean “never”. It means “sometimes”. The trick is getting back to your balanced lifestyle without spiraling into a pit of guilt and doubt.

The brownies don’t do you in. The spiral does.

I’ve found a tremendous amount of inspiration from images I’ve seen on Pinterest. Here are a few that have stuck with me.

  • Starting Weight: 195.5 pounds
  • Week Seven Weight: 187 pounds (+.5 pounds this week / -8.5 pounds total)
  • Goal Weight: 165 lbs

What do your crave? Come on, I can’t be the only one who has eaten 1/2 pan of Brownies on a Saturday night.

Did you see the pin about “if I had to run for my life I would die.”? Too funny. Now I need a milkshake.

I found a bag of homemade toffee in the freezer yesterday. I did manage to stop myself after I ate half the bag.

Isn’t it? This is why I run at home. In my basement. With the door closed.

I wish we lived closer..we could scare the neighbors together with a little trot down the road!

I’ve tried to remind myself not to restrict. It’s when I give something up that it becomes all I could think about. I gave up meat for Lent and I’d never craved red bloody steaks before that.

I wish you well, avoiding that spiral is hard.

Thank you for the well wishes! I had to give up dairy when I nursed both my kids…I’ve never wanted a string cheese so much in my life!

Or an EL Fudge . . . and then you eat the entire package. At least that was one of my downfalls before the whole gluten free thing. Now, it’s Ben and Jerry’s.

And that picture of the kid running in yellow – made me die laughing!

I let a pack of EL Fudge into my house this year. They lasted less than 24 hours. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?

I recently gave up dairy, except for chocolate (because…no way). Now all I want to eat is chocolate. Maybe it’s a replacement for the big glasses of milk I used to drink, and cheese. But eating a sandwich for lunch with a big side of chocolate isn’t a pattern I can keep up.

Have you tried chocolate soy milk? I don’t like regular or even vanilla soymilk, but the chocolate (Silk) is tasty and tastes like a treat. Well…it tastes like a treat if you haven’t had real chocolate for a few weeks. 😉
