Carina has been typing on the internets before there was a www in front of everything. This is why she’s cranky and wants to know when you’ll get off her lawn. She resides in a hopelessly outdated home in the Mountain West with a mathematician and three children hell-bent on destruction. Her laundry is not done, but her Twitter is totally up to date. Carina does not have a Tumblr, because get serious.

The Mommy Playlist

It started with “Chantilly Lace.” I couldn’t help it! Something about my baby girl on the changing table pulled the Big Bopper out of my unconscious and into a song.
Chantilly lace and a pretty face
And a pony tail hangin’ down
A wiggle in the walk and a giggle in the talk
Make the world go ’round
This kind of thing has happened to me before. A song just pops into your head and you start singing it to your child. Maybe it’s a moment of frustration, like the time my two boys were fighting in the tub and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” came out of my face. It came out of my face real loud. At least it stopped them from fighting.

The most notorious time was when I rushed to my then toddler, who had been crying the terrified cry, and started humming something, which turned out to be the Soviet national anthem.

Tonight, as baby girl fussed and screamed all I could do was open my mouth and start singing. What came out?

All you other kids with the pumped up kicks better run, better run, outrun my gun

Sure, all the babies love the songs about kids shooting other kids for their expensive sneakers.

I can’t be the only one with the spontaneous music channel in my head. What song has most surprised you by its appearance on the Mommy Playlist?

I have had Pumped Up Kicks in my head for a few weeks now, but I kept forgetting to look it up. LOVE this song.

My 4 yo likes Bad Romance (the Glee version) and sings “Ra ra ra ra ra” all the time. That and Adele’s Rolling In the Deep. She would sing them all day if I didn’t tape her mouth shut. Okay, not really. But I’m tempted… {:

Too funny! I’ll never forget singing “Hey There Little Red Riding Hood” by Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs to my first born — creepy! And once my husband was playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the kids’ xylophone, and then it gradually morphed into “Girls” by the Beastie Boys. He’s very talented.

Yes! My 2 1/2 year old has been singing pumped up kicks TO ME! It was on in the car and she yelled at me to turn it up. It’s pretty much the song I send my kids to school with in the morning.

I sing Taylor Swift’s “Why do You have to be so Mean?” to my kids when they are arguing…or just when I feel like it.
