Your Cinco de Mayo Party!

Time to celebrate the victory of Mexican forces against the French in the Battle of Puebla! Oh, you didn’t know? Yes, Cinco de Mayo celebrates a military battle. Frankly, it’s just a great excuse to throw a party, and I’m making it simple for you.

What are you going to wear?

This gauze maxi dress from Old Navy or the complimentary “Mexicali” gauze blouse.

You might get them for Cinco de Mayo, but you’ll wear them all summer long.

What will you serve?

Elote: What’s elote? Oh, amigo, you will love this. Get some corn on the cob. How much? I don’t know, how many people at your party? For six cobs: combine half a cup of mayo with 1 tablespoon of lime juice. In another bowl, combine 1 teaspoon chile powder, ¼ tsp cayenne, ½ tsp cumin, ½ tsp salt, 1/2 cup cotija cheese or fresh grated Parmesan cheese. Shuck your corn cobs, coat them with cooking spray, and grill them for about 10 minutes. Remove from the grill, brush with the mayo, sprinkle with the cheese mix. Eat those suckers. Tres Leches Cake: Look, you can buy a good tres leches cake if you’re in a panic. If you want to make your own (and I recommend it) bake a yellow cake–from scratch is best because a box cake will disintegrate. Mix together 1 cup evaporated milk, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, and 1 cup half and half. Poke your cake with a fork or a skewer, and pour the milk mixture over it until it’s absorbed. Serve with fresh fruit (peaches or strawberries) and whipped cream.

Tacos: Put a pork roast rubbed with chile powder and cumin in the crockpot for 10 hours. Go to your local Mexican market and pick up fresh corn tortillas. Serve your tortillas with cilantro, white onion, and the shredded pork. You’re welcome.

What will you drink?

Margaritas. Ditch the mix. Do it the right way: tequila, Grand Marnier, squeeze of orange, and lime juice. You can add some simple syrup of you like things sweeter. Beer? It’s time to try the pride of Baja California: Tecate.

However, since Cinco de Mayo is on a weekday this year, and maybe you don’t want to swallow the worm on a Thursday, there are other options: Mexican Coke and Fanta in their huge glass bottles are made with sugar, not high-fructose corn syrup, and look awesome in a bucket of ice. I can find them at my local Costco in cases, take a look in yours. If you have a Mexican market in town take a trip down the soda and beer aisles; it’s always fun doing a sampling of drinks you’ve never had with your friends.
