Art Supplies? Computers? What Does Your School Need?

I caught a brief snippet of The Today Show earlier this week. Matt Lauer was interviewing President Obama about the state of our educational system and led off with a statistic that literally made my jaw drop.

“One-third of America students won’t graduate from High School.”

As a mother of a toddler, I’ve certainly started to dip my toe into the murky waters of investigating my child’s future education options.  But I’m still in that transitional time where I’m reading about potty training, sleep issues AND how to get my child on the right track as far as school is concerned. So, it’s not like I’ve had my head under a rock, but for crying out loud—ONE THIRD? That shocked me.

Sure, there are probably nineteen dozen factors that contribute to the struggles in our educational system and the drop out rate, but I’m guessing that limited resources are a big issue.

So, I’m happy to hear that Bing is taking a big step toward helping schools get the resources they need with their Our School Needs campaign – a program that will distribute more than a million dollars to schools in need.

Students and teachers are encouraged to submit an entry for their school, and there are three categories; elementary, middle and high school. PLUS the first 30,000 voters each day (voting begins October 13 and runs through October 22) will receive a $3 donation to support the classroom project of their choice at

The Our School Needs contest isn’t waiting around to do good—they kicked off their campaign with a visit to Marie Curie Middle School in Bayside, Queens to surprise Ms. Schecter’s band class.

The gentleman wheeling in a cartful of brand new instruments? It’s Grammy-nominated singer, Josh Groban!

Now, GO! Get your kids thinking about the programs in their school that could use a boost and head to Our School Needs to send in your submission.

*Disclosure: This post was sponsored by bing. But even if it wasn’t, I would have still shared the news of this great contest with you. Why? Because what school couldn’t use a few extra bucks?
