Work From Home Tips

Motherhood…they say it’s one of the hardest jobs in the book. But sometimes, for full time moms this job can leave you wanting a little more, financially that is. For many moms, working from home is the ideal opportunity to make a little cash and be at home to spend time with and look after your little ones. Through my reporting as a financial journalist (and a mother of two, who might I add, works at home) I’ve learned about the best places to find work-from-home opportunities and what to watch out for when looking for a work-from-home job. Here are some of my favorite tips:

Sites you can trust:

To sidestep work from home scams, use sites such as Women For Hire or Mom Corps to find legitimate stay at home jobs. Larger, well-known companies, such as Jet Blue also often hire work from home agents.

Be cautious:

If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the sites I mentioned, try a general web search. If you find what looks like a good work from home opportunity, be sure to check its legitimacy with the Better Business Bureau just to be safe.

Signs of a scam:

There are some definite red flags that you should be on the lookout for when searching for work-from-home jobs. These include: paying for training, waiting a month or more before you get your check, claims that you can make a lot of money with little or no-experience, or by putting in very few hours, anything that requires you to pay up front for instructions or supplies.

Make the space your own:

Once you’ve secured a legitimate work-from-home job, make a designated workspace for yourself. In other words, your dining room table shouldn’t be your desk. A designated workspace will also send a signal to your family that when you’re in that space, you’re at work. You’ll also need to make sure you have all necessary supplies. Supplies will vary depending on the nature of the work you’re doing but it’s a good idea to secure a computer with Internet access and a phone line that’s solely for work purposes.

Turn your current position into a work-from-home position:

These days, technology is making it significantly easier to work from virtually anywhere. If you think you could do your current job from home, there are a few things you need to think about before you approach your boss with the idea. Think about your reason for wanting to work from home. Will you save on commuting costs? Do you think you could be more productive? Could the company save money in any way? Then think about your own performance. Would your boss trust you to get your work done without supervision? Lastly, think about how you could make working from home possible. Would it be full-time or part-time? What supplies would the company need to provide you with? After you’ve thought about each of these aspects, set up a time to meet with your boss to discuss the possibility. If he or she is on the fence, ask them to consider a trial period where your progress can be charted. At the end of the trial, review your progress together and come up with a situation that will benefit both you and your boss.
