Kid Friendly Lunch Ideas

Getting kids to try new foods can be a challenge.  In addition to being fun, these recipes help empower kids to make healthy choices.

Wish-Kabobs

Use this idea as a springboard and use any healthy ingredients that you wish!

Ingredients

  • ½ pound lean deli ham, sliced, rolled and cut into 1 inch chunks
  • 4 slices multi-grain bread, cut into cubes
  • 1 cucumber, cut into chunks
  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup cubed Colby Jack cheese

Dipping sauce

  • ½ cup light Ranch dressing
  • ¼ cup taco sauce

12 wooden skewers

Instructions

Alternate threading ingredients on wooden skewers.  If your children are old enough, let them participate in the fun.  Combine ranch and taco sauce, garnish with chopped green onions if desired.

Berry-Mango Skewers

Make fruit more attractive by getting creative with these strawberry-inspired skewers.

Ingredients

  • 8 large strawberries, cut into thirds
  • 1 mango, cut into small chunks
  • 8 seedless green grapes
  • 8 seedless red grapes

Dip

  • ½ cup plain non-fat yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

4 wooden skewers, cut in half

Instructions

Alternately thread strawberry slices and mango.  Top each end with a grape.  Combine yogurt and vanilla for optional dipping sauce.

Kid Mix

Sweet meets salty in a new kid mix sensation that is as light as it is delicious.  Perfect for picnics or play dates.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Quaker Oh’s
  • 2 cups light popcorn
  • 2 cups mini-marshmallows
  • 2 cups pretzels
  • 1 cup cheddar Goldfish crackers

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.  Gently fold together.  Serve or store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
