A Resourceful Dreamer

As a new mom, Kathy researched toxin-free products for her own family and started SafeMama.com as a way to save other parents from the time-consuming task. See how her artistic background led her to Dream Big.

Name
Katherine Scoleri

City / State
West Palm Beach, Florida but you can also find me spending part of the year in Peachtree City, Georgia.

What was your big dream?
I never had one big dream, I just dreamed of being happy with whatever I was doing. I never wanted to be one of those people stuck in a job I hated. I hoped I’d be lucky enough to be doing something that satisfied me every day and hopefully the people around me.

How did you accomplish it?
A little bit of luck, some unforeseen circumstances and hard work. I was working at a big fancy consulting firm and was laid off right before 9/11. I knew it was my chance to pursue what I really loved. I started my own business designing websites that year and have been a self-employed entrepreneur ever since. I don’t regret that decision for a second. Now I am the co-owner of a popular design company Moxie Design Studios, a published author (I co-wrote The IT Girls Guide to Blogging with Moxie with my business partner Joelle Reeder) and the Editor of SafeMama.com and LovelySafeMama.com.

Where did you find inspiration to get started?
I’m an artist. I went to school for art, and got a degree in art. As an artist I find inspiration in everything. In a photo, in museums, in the card aisle at Target, or while sitting at The Train Table in Barnes 7 Noble. But having the chance to start my own business was inspired by pure circumstance and opportunity. I knew I had something to offer and didn’t want to waste another minute not pursuing it. You never know unless you take a chance, make mistakes and gather character from them. I was too anxious to start making those mistakes than to sit around at a desk job wasting my creativity on someone else’s dreams.

What motivated you to keep going?
Besides my mortgage payment? I suppose just my own natural desire to be doing something I loved. Once our design business was off the ground and successful I drew motivation for my other projects from motherhood my family. SafeMama.com was born purely out of my motivation to help other parents know what I was learning. There is so much we need to know as parents today… I had no idea how much information was out there that they don’t tell you in parenting handbooks. I was a new mother, I was tired and I knew I wasn’t the only one. I was motivated to share my knowledge and hopefully help someone else get a few extra hours out of their day by not having to do the work I had already done.

What’s your next Big Dream?
Other than retire and open my own art studio? I have so many… I would love to write another book. But mostly I just want to see the projects I’ve already started, grow. Once SafeMama.com became popular we opened a sister-site called LovelySafeMama.com. I got so many emails from women who read SafeMama.com saying they had their kids safe now “What about us?”. So I devoted a site to them to cover all areas of safer skin care and cosmetics. We need safe stuff too! So I’d love to spend time developing that into a more robust resource for women. Then I’ll work on that art studio.

Who is your hero?
Hands down, my mother. I know, it sounds like a canned response but really, she is an amazing woman. She is the most creative, talented, driven, hard working, motivated, caring woman I know. She’s a great role model for me as a woman and a mother.

What do you wish you did better?
I tend to not focus on the things I don’t do well… everyone is different and has different strengths. Wishing I could do something better belittles the efforts I put into the things I can do. But if I could have stellar organization skills I think my life would be easier. I just don’t keep as organized as my brain would like me to be!

What book is on your night stand?
I always have a copy of The IT Girls Guide to Blogging with Moxie nearby, I am so proud of it! But I just finished reading Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. I’m having a baby in July so I’m trying to get as much leisure reading done as possible!

What is your favorite lipstick?
I don’t wear it but I have about 7 organic lip balms in my bag and a tube of Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Lip Gloss in Sweet Pink.

What is your favorite quote?
“One day I won’t be able to do the things I want to do, today is not that day.” – Unknown
