The Finish Line

The staff meeting started innocently enough but by the end three of our staff members had committed to training for a Triathlon. Read how my race day dream ended in a very special surprise.

What was your big dream?
To finish a Sprint Triathlon. While I was at packet pickup the night before the race I was so nauseous – I thought it was from nerves. I would find out 10 days later that it was really morning sickness that was making my stomach lurch. We had been trying to get pregnant for 4 years so I was shocked and elated when I found out.

How did you accomplish it?
Rachael, Stephanie and I trained together and worked with a great trainer named Dave Pruetz. If left to my own devices, I’ll push working out off my schedule to make time for work or family, but if I knew that the girls would be waiting for me at the pool at 6a, you better believe I got myself out the door to meet them! (I wish I could say that they were always as dedicated. I’m looking at YOU Rachael.)

Where did you find inspiration to get started?
It was our first post-holiday staff meeting and everyone showed up in elastic waist pants because we had overindulged on treats. We were talking about wanting to be in better shape and someone said, “Let’s do a Triathlon”. So Stephanie, Rachael and I agreed to train together – looking back I realized we all shamed each other into doing it – I know I was waiting for someone to back out so I could too!

What motivated you to keep going?
Training for a Triathlon makes your focus on your technique and speed. That was a big departure from my regular fitness routine of working out and hopping on the scale to see if I’d lost weight. Women are notorious for picking apart their features and focusing on the parts that they don’t like. I found that I had a much better view of my body after training, not because I was skinnier but because I was proud of what my body was able to accomplish.

What’s your next Big Dream?
I want to finish another Sprint Triathlon – this time without having to walk during the running portion of the race.

Who is your hero?
My Mom. She is kind, patient and always sees the silver lining.

What do you wish you did better?
I wish I was better at managing my time. Having a baby has annihilated my ability to get out the door on time and with everything that I’m supposed to have in my hand.

What book is on your night stand?
When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris (listening to NPR got me hooked on him years ago) and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth (we have some napping issues at our house).

What is your favorite lipstick?
I’m too lazy for all the work that goes into keeping lipstick looking good. But I’m a huge fan of gloss – my favorite is Aveda Lip Shine in Beet Root.
